In July 2024, the Red Tent Program became part of WestCare GulfCoast-Florida’s family of programs. Established in 2012, Red Tent provides compassionate, supportive care tailored to individuals with challenging life experiences in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties who are incarcerated or at risk of incarceration. Now operating as a WestCare program, Red Tent serves both men and women, expanding its reach and impact across the community.
Using proven approaches and structured guidance, participants learn emotional regulation, coping strategies, mindfulness, and life skills that support healing, self-sufficiency, and successful reentry into society. Outcomes include reduced recidivism, improved communication, increased resilience, and greater access to employment and housing.
Why It Matters
- The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with over 1.2 million people in state and federal prisons and millions more in local jails and under supervision.
- Approximately two-thirds of individuals released from incarceration are re-arrested within three years.
- Most incarcerated individuals have experienced unaddressed trauma, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders.
- Incarceration disrupts families, employment, and housing stability, increasing the risk of poverty, homelessness, and generational involvement with the justice system.
With the right support, individuals leaving incarceration can regain stability, contribute to their communities, and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
Our Impact
Since 2012, Red Tent has helped over 1,000 participants avoid re-incarceration and rebuilding their lives.
- National recidivism rates exceed 50%, while Red Tent participants show a return-to-jail rate of approximately 24%.
- The average cost to incarcerate one person in Florida is over $28,000 per year. Red Tent saves taxpayers millions while helping individuals and families achieve lasting change.
